John and Meg DeCubellis were awarded the honor of Community
Heroes by the Blue Cross/Blue
Shield of Rhode Island and the American Red Cross. Community Heroes
can be everyday citizens, local firefighters, Good Samaritans or
emergency responders. This award is presented ten months a year to
individuals who either show a single act of heroism or for an effort
performed over a period of time. Nominations are sent in from
members of the community and voted on by a selection committee. Due
to the inspiring work in the face of tragedy, John and Meg were
awarded this distinguished honor. On February 26, 2007 they were
interviewed on WHJJ’s Helen Glover show (who sits on the committee)
and each month she features the hero(es) on her show. Throughout the
interview she was truly inspired at the work they have done in the
face of losing their daughter Katie and the great work of the KDMF.
Cox Cable graciously awarded KDMF with a generous grant including $25,000 in public service advertising followed by a $1000 donation. Senator Jim Sheehan (Warwick, RI) was instrumental in coordinating this public service effort. At the Cox film studios in Warwick, RI, John DeCubellis filmed a public service announcement which ran during the summer months on all of Cox’s television stations. Shown here accepting a check from Ana Paiz of Cox Cable are John & Meg DeCubellis and Senator Jim Sheehan.
